Before you Enrol

Before applying, there are some general things you should know about studying in Australia and at The Sydney English Language Academy.

Attendance Requirements

Students enrolled on a student visa must maintain at least 80% attendance of scheduled contact hours of their ELICOS course.Students must attend classes, on-campus for a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Course Deferrals and Suspensions

Students are able to defer or temporarily suspend their studies during their course only in certain limited circumstances, on the grounds of compassionate or compelling circumstances. Students who would like to defer their studies must first speak to the Academic Coordinator.  Prior to applying to defer their program students must ensure that they have paid any tuition fees outstanding, or which will fall due during the period of leave. There is no reduction in course fees during periods of leave. Deferral of studies is permitted only in compassionate or compelling circumstances such as serious illness, death in the family or for some other reason. Students will be required to provide evidence of the compassionate or compelling circumstances. Students that are suspended or granted deferral may be required to extend their course and their visa at their own expense, and that availability of units of study are not guaranteed. Students may be suspended from their studies for serious and willful misconduct. Misconduct may include, but is not limited to, criminal activity, harassment or verbal abuse of staff or students, failure to pay fees, plagiarism or cheating. Students will have the right to appeal through the college’s published appeals and grievances process. In this event, any and all additional costs in completing the enrolled course will be borne by the student.
